Shifting Bottleneck

Maximizing throughput in a “Shifting Bottleneck” secnario:

A job shop – where the dependent processes and the consraints are a function of order basket and are shifting all the time

At one of my current clients we are setting up measrues to improve throughput, OTIF and cost.

Things that are working are:
1. Establishing pull via customized KANBAN
2. Workethics
– when you have work (material in in-tray and room in out-tray): work as fast as you can
– when your out-tray is full or in-tray is empty: i) help the process whose in tray has max. inventory ii) if step one in not possible do maintenance/ housekeeping activities
3. orders relseased for prodction in sequence of delivery + production lead times.

The above actions: improve flow, improve bottleneck output, optimize inventory
